There are certain items that we use on a daily basis and sometimes, we may use them multiple times per day. We know exactly what they are when we see them on the counter or in a drawer, but that may not be true of everyone who sees them.
Sometimes, we may have an item that was used every day by our parents or grandparents, but we may never have picked up one in our life. We will find them in the back of the drawer or perhaps in a box in the attic, and when we do, we may wonder what they are.
When most of us think about gadgets, we automatically think about electronic devices but that is really only scratching the surface. The kitchen is also an area of the home where we will find gadgets in abundance, and that includes the gadget we have on display today.
Although you may not know what this little kitchen tool is, it was something that really helped to revolutionize the use of canned goods in the kitchen. After all, opening a can of food was a dangerous task, especially if you were trying to do so with a hammer and chisel.
This device was also available before many homes had an electronic Can Opener or before lids for cans had pop tops. In many cases, they were made in a way that you could use this device to open the can easily.
The device is known as a can opener key, and it was commonly used for opening specific types of cans, including spam, canned ham, and sardine cans.
There was a sharp blade and a handle that would be turned. You will put the lid of the can into the handle and as you turned it, it would eventually peel back the lid to expose the food on the inside.
By the time the 1950s and 1960s came around, the use of these can opener keys was diminishing quickly. Other types of technology were now being used, including electric can openers or a handheld Rotary Can Opener, such as what is used today.
We also began having cans stocked on the shelves in recent years that have a pop top. These are very convenient, as they can be opened, even if you don’t have a can opener.
The can opener key is something that is nostalgic for many people who use it. These days, however, it may be kept in the kitchen but it is rarely ever going to be used in the kitchen.
