An 18-year-old woman, a Redditor shared her story on Reddit’s “AITA” subreddit. The woman explained that her father had left her a two story home, and she rented the first floor. She was receiving $500 monthly as rent.
She explained that she is renting the first floor for a cheap price due to the distance of her house with the city. There are similar buildings near her house which are renting for $600 of $700 monthly.
She had talked with her boyfriend of three months to move in with her, as her boyfriend was having problems in his own rent, and he didn’t wanted to move back in with his parents.
She had stated that he is welcome to stay as long as he wants, until he solves some problems. For three months, the couple lived together, as she didn’t asked for rent. They were only splitting the groceries.
And OP didn’t informed her boyfriend that she owned the house, as she thought that it was not a problem. As one day, her tenant wanted to talk with her about the broken freezer, which her boyfriend heard their talk.
She went downstairs to check the freezer, and said that she could get a new one, and she would pay for it, if it can’t be fixed.
The her boyfriend wanted to talk about the freezer, and if it can be fixed, which OP shared that it can’t. And OP wrote, “I told him no, but [the tenant] was going to buy a new one and I would pay for it. He looked at me like I was crazy and asked me why the hell I would pay for her freezer, I told him that because I am her landlord [sic].”
That conversation made her boyfriend angry, and he started to yell at her. He stated that she was an evil person for not telling him that she was the owner of the building. As she apologized, her boyfriend kept shouting, telling that landlords are evil and they only think about their money.
“He demanded that I give him 50% of the money I make from rent or else I was just as bad as he thought,” OP stated in her post. Then he stopped talking to her for a while, as he gave OP a silent treatment.
Later on, as her boyfriend kept acting weird, she decided to stop their relationship. She asked her father to come over while she talks with her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend said to OP, as she shared, “If you don’t rent out for the purpose of taking people’s money, you should have no problem giving any of that money away.”
Then OP asked her boyfriend that why he wants half of the money, while thinking that landlords are evil. She offered to give half of the money to a charity. Then her boyfriend called her selfish, and he stated that he is ashamed of her.
Then her father came and as OP shared, “My boyfriend just laughed and told us both he never wants to see us again and that he was out.”
Some Redditors had stated that she should change the locks, and be aware if her ex-boyfriend would like to talk to her.
